Father Mine ♦ J.R. Ward | Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Heart-Wrenching, Raw, and Unforgettable

As someone who has been following the Black Dagger Brotherhood series from the beginning, I already knew from Lover Awakened that Zsadist and Bella were expecting a baby. By the time I reached Lover Enshrined and then stepped into this novella, I thought I was prepared for their next chapter. I wasn’t.

Ever since the birth of his daughter, Nalla, Zsadist has been regressing further and further into the life he led before he met Bella, his beautiful shellan. He has been waking up in cold sweats due to nightmares from his past, hasn't made love to his wife, and won't hold his baby girl, for fear that he might hurt her. While Nalla's presence had consisted of only joy and excitement in first couple months of her life, now it seems to be driving the couple apart. Bella is afraid that she and Nalla just may need to leave her hellren.

But then Zsadist gets injured on a mission to fight the lessers and because he hasn't been feeding from Bella, almost loses his life. Could this near-death experience create the motivation to pull this couple back together? Or has the gap between them spanned too far for redemption?

Father Mine ♦ J.R. Ward

A Review

Opinion

This short story, set right after Lover Enshrined, is a masterclass in emotional storytelling. Zsadist, once the most broken and feared of the Brothers, is now a father—and yet the joy of Nalla’s birth is overshadowed by the shadows of his past. The emotional realism here is striking. Ward doesn’t give us an easy “happily ever after” but instead digs deep into the raw truth: trauma doesn’t magically vanish because life moves forward. Zsadist’s inner demons resurface, threatening not only his own fragile peace but the foundation of his marriage.

Bella’s side of the story is equally compelling. Her struggle is one of heartbreaking complexity—balancing love for her hellren with fear for her daughter, questioning whether staying together is healing or harming them all. Ward captures both perspectives so vividly that you feel every hesitation, every moment of longing, and every flicker of hope.

The tension builds beautifully until Zsadist’s near-death experience forces both of them to face the question: Is love enough to bridge the distance between them? The answer—delivered in Ward’s signature style of grit, passion, and soul-deep connection—left me teary-eyed and deeply satisfied.

Conclusion

This novella is not just a continuation of Zsadist and Bella’s story; it’s a reminder that love is as much about surviving the dark as it is about embracing the light. The emotions are painfully real, the stakes personal, and the payoff worth every page.

For anyone who loved Lover Awakened, this is an essential, unmissable piece of their journey. It will break your heart, then stitch it back together in a way only J.R. Ward can.
