Dreams of Chaos: A Solid but Uneven Step in Lawless’s Mythic Ireland

Shauna Lawless’s Dreams of Chaos, the second prequel to her Gael Song trilogy, continues to expand on her vision of mythological historical fantasy set in medieval Ireland. The novel follows Murchad, the son of the legendary Brian Boru, as he comes of age amidst war, political upheaval, and the ever-present tension between Ireland’s storied mythic past and the brutal realities of Viking raids. It is a book that offers another climb into Lawless’s richly researched and vividly drawn world, but for me, it landed somewhere in the middle—solid, worthwhile, yet not quite as compelling as it could have been.

A young Irish prince must forge his own path in a land of war and magic. Part of Shauna Lawless's critically acclaimed Gael Song fantasy series set in medieval Ireland.

Murchad is born into one of the royal families of Munster. His uncle is king, and his father is the mighty warrior Brian Boru, who is often away fighting to keep their borders safe.

When he is still a boy, Murchad's world is torn apart when Viking raiders assail his homeland. Having witnessed the carnage, Murchad grows up in a whirl of conflict, as thoughts of vengeance and rage mingle with his desire for peace.

In an Ireland where strength of arms or weight of gold convey the ultimate power, can Murchad tread his own path, or will he be destroyed by the weight of expectations in a world caught between a legendary past and a dangerous future?

Dreams of Chaos ♦ Shauna Lawless

A Review

Opinion

On the positive side, Lawless excels at atmosphere. She brings early medieval Ireland to life with a rare combination of grit and lyricism. The descriptions of landscapes, battlefields, and even courtly politics feel grounded in reality while still tinged with myth. The Vikings, in particular, are written with menace and weight, reminding readers of the ever-present threat to Ireland’s kingdoms. Murchad’s childhood trauma, watching his homeland torn apart, feels immediate and painful, and his simmering need to find a place for himself is one of the novel’s strongest throughlines.

I also appreciated the way Lawless continues to weave myth into the narrative without allowing it to overshadow the human story. This has been a defining feature of the Gael Song books: the mythological elements are not flashy set pieces but rather quiet, persistent presences that shape the world and its people. Readers who enjoyed that balance in the main trilogy will likely find satisfaction here as well.

Where the book falters, however, is in pacing and character depth. The early sections of Murchad’s life are compelling, but much of the middle felt bogged down by repetition—cycles of conflict, revenge, and internal struggle that did not always add new dimensions to his character. Murchad himself, though sympathetic, never fully came alive for me in the way that other central figures in Lawless’s universe have. His desire to “tread his own path” is admirable, but the execution felt underdeveloped, making his arc somewhat predictable.

Additionally, while the historical detail is impressive, it occasionally overwhelms the story. There were moments where I felt as though I was reading a well-researched chronicle more than a novel, and the mythological undercurrents—one of Lawless’s greatest strengths—took a backseat as a result. Readers looking for the sweeping emotional intensity of the main trilogy might find this prequel comparatively restrained.

Conclusion

Overall, Dreams of Chaos is a competent and at times engrossing addition to the Gael Song series. It builds the world further, enriches the historical context, and shows Lawless’s ongoing commitment to blending myth with history. Yet it also left me wanting more—more tension, more originality in character arcs, and more emotional resonance. For fans of the series, it is worth reading, but as a standalone, it may not capture hearts as strongly as the mainline novels.
