His Royal Threat ♦ Darcy Fayton | ARC Review

Confessions, Conspiracies, and a Royal Visit

His Royal Threat by Darcy Fayton picks up exactly where His Dark Jealousy leaves off, without wasting a single page. The arrival of Crown Prince Zackary at Rookvane Manor immediately raises the tension, as neither Kathryn nor Sebastian knows where the Prince’s true loyalties lie. Is he an ally? An enemy? Or simply a man with an agenda of his own? That uncertainty gives the novella an entertaining layer of suspense right from the beginning.

A prince at the door. A secret in his throat. A woman he loves and has never deserved.

When the Crown Prince arrives at Rookvane Manor, Sebastian must host a man who outranks him in every measure that matters—including, perhaps, in Kathryn's regard. The Prince is charming. Attentive. Curious about her in ways Sebastian cannot afford to misread. And he has the power to change Volmasque Kingdom in ways Sebastian can only dream of.

But the Prince is not the worst threat under Sebastian's roof. That honour belongs to the secret Sebastian has carried for five years—the one Kathryn does not remember. His deepest, darkest secret. The one that could cost him everything.

This New Year's Eve is the seventh day of Christmas.
They are halfway through the bargain.
And Sebastian Vale is running out of nights to keep lying.

His Royal Threat ♦ Darcy Fayton

A Review

Opinion

The emotional centerpiece of this installment is undoubtedly Sebastian finally revealing the secret he has been carrying for the past five years. Before he can get there, however, he needs a little push out of his own head, courtesy of Mr. Kenneth, who orchestrates a rather memorable sparring session between Sebastian and Ramsey. It is a surprisingly effective scene, breaking through Sebastian‘s emotional walls in a way that felt both natural and satisfying.

And the secret itself?
It is every bit as dark and haunting as the previous installments promised. Yet what struck me most is that Sebastian is not truly to blame for what happened. The weight he has carried belongs far more to the sins of his father than to his own actions, making his confession feel tragic rather than condemnable.

Speaking of fathers, Tiberion continues to be one of the series’ greatest mysteries. I find myself increasingly fascinated by his true motives. Why was he so cruel to Kathryn and her mother, abandoning them beneath overwhelming debts and mortgages? What was he truly trying to accomplish? Equally intriguing is the lingering mystery surrounding Rookvane Manor itself. Kathryn inherited the estate, yet her family name has seemingly never appeared anywhere throughout the manor’s documented history. Every answer uncovers two new questions, and I’m thoroughly invested in discovering how these threads will eventually come together.

I also appreciated Kathryn‘s reaction once Sebastian finally confessed. She recognized that the burden he carried was never truly of his own making, and her response felt compassionate and believable. That said, despite the emotional importance of the scene, I never quite felt the emotional impact I had hoped for. The moment was significant, but the sparks simply didn’t hit me as deeply as I expected.

The novella ends on another clever note as Kathryn, Sebastian, and Crown Prince Zackary begin setting a trap to lure Sebastian’s father, Tiberion, into the open. It’s a satisfying development that promises plenty of intrigue for what’s to come.

One small disappointment, unrelated to the story itself, is the mid-series redesign of the covers. Personally, I’m not a fan of changing a series’ visual identity halfway through, especially when the new covers appear to have been AI-generated. I much preferred the original artwork, and as someone who appreciates consistent cover design across a series, the change was a bit of a letdown.

Conclusion

Overall, His Royal Threat continues to deepen the mysteries surrounding Rookvane Manor while finally delivering one of the revelations the series has been building toward. Although the emotional payoff didn’t fully land for me, the expanding political intrigue, the unanswered questions surrounding Tiberion, and the growing alliance between Kathryn, Sebastian, and the Crown Prince have left me eager to dive straight into the eighth installment.

About Darcy Fayton

Darcy Fayton crafts fireside tales set in gothic castles, overflowing with forbidden love, emotional angst, scorching spice, witty banter, and a touch of magic. Her stories feature morally grey yet gentlemanly heroes with sweet sides and glimmers of redemption, perfect for readers who love complex characters. Her bestselling debut, Collared by the Vampire Prince, is the ideal starting point for new readers. Her family thinks she writes sweet romance—but oh, if only they knew!
