Collared by the Vampire Prince ♦ Darcy Fayton | Review of revised new edition

A Familiar Story with Sharper Fangs

Back in 2024, I already read and reviewed Collared by the Vampire Prince by Darcy Fayton and gave the original version a solid four stars. So, when I learned that the story had been completely rewritten and reimagined, turning what was originally planned as a duology into the Collared Trilogy, I was definitely curious. Would revisiting Kira and Nathaniel actually feel different enough to justify reading the story all over again?

The answer is a very clear yes.

Through BookSirens I received an advance review copy (ARC) for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Captured. Humiliated. Collared by the enemy.

Kira is an illegal wolf shifter whose true form should exist only in nightmares.
If anyone ever discovered her secret, she would be condemned as an abomination. A monster.

But when Prince Nathaniel catches her shifting, he doesn't see a monster.
He sees something beautiful. Someone worth saving.

Except Kira sees only the enemy who could have her executed.
So she does what any cornered wolf would do.
She bites him. Hard.

It's a crime punishable by death, and Nathaniel knows he should surrender her to his brutal father, the Vampire King. Instead, he locks a collar around her throat and takes her to Volmasque Academy—a gothic castle where wolves are trained to obey their future vampire masters and please them in every way.

With their blood.
With their bodies.
With their submission.

But Kira is not so easily tamed.

And the deeper Nathaniel falls for her, the more he realises the most dangerous thing about Kira isn’t her bite.

Collared by the Vampire Prince ♦ Darcy Fayton

An ARC Review

Opinion

While the heart of the story is still recognizable, this new edition feels considerably more developed. The expanded world-building and greater character depth made it much easier for me to become immersed in the story, and rather than feeling as though I was simply rereading a book I already knew, it often felt like I was getting reacquainted with familiar characters whose story I had only partially known before.

Kira Is Still Not a Wolf You Can Easily Collar

Kira remains one of the biggest strengths of the story for me. She is an illegal wolf shifter whose true form could mean her death if anyone discovered what she really is. Unfortunately for her, Vampire Prince Nathaniel does exactly that.
And then she bites him.

Not exactly the best way to make a good first impression on a vampire prince, but certainly an effective one.
Instead of handing her over to his father and condemning her to death, Nathaniel collars Kira and brings her to Volmasque Academy, where wolves are trained to serve vampires. Needless to say, Kira has absolutely no intention of becoming an obedient little pet.

Her defiance, anger, fear, and determination came across even more strongly in this rewritten edition. With the additional character development, I felt that I understood her decisions and reactions better, particularly considering the dangerous power imbalance between her and Nathaniel.

Chemistry That Practically Crackles

What stood out even more this time was the chemistry between Kira and Nathaniel. It is there almost immediately, simmering underneath their hostility, distrust, attraction, and the complicated circumstances surrounding them.

Nathaniel might technically hold the power, but Kira certainly doesn’t make things easy for him. Their constant push and pull creates exactly the kind of tension I want from an enemies-to-lovers story. And because the revised edition gives both the characters and their relationship more room to develop, their attraction felt even more intense than I remembered from my first read.

Nathaniel‘s growing fascination with Kira also worked particularly well for me. He is supposed to see her as something dangerous and forbidden, yet instead he sees someone worth protecting. Of course, that doesn’t suddenly erase the darker aspects of their relationship or the world they inhabit, but that moral complexity is part of what makes their dynamic so compelling.

The spicy scenes also worked better for me in this version. However, spice is always extremely dependent on personal preferences and comfort zones, particularly in a book that deliberately plays with dubious consent, submission, possession, and significant power imbalances. There were still moments that pushed slightly beyond what I personally enjoy, and that is ultimately where the missing 0.25 stars went.

More Than Just a Revised Edition

What impressed me most is that this doesn’t feel like an author simply polishing a few sentences, adding another chapter, and sending the book back into the world with a shiny new cover. The richer world-building and deeper characterization genuinely add something to the story.

Volmasque Academy and the relationship between vampires and wolves feel more substantial, while Kira and Nathaniel themselves have been given more layers. Knowing that the original duology has now become a trilogy also makes me curious about how much further Darcy Fayton intends to expand the world and its conflicts.

Most importantly, despite already knowing these characters and the basic foundation of their story, I never felt bored.

Conclusion

★★★★★

Reading Collared by the Vampire Prince again felt less like a reread and more like meeting Kira and Nathaniel for the second time and discovering that they had been hiding quite a few things from me during our first encounter.

I already enjoyed the original version enough to give it four stars, but the rewritten edition improves upon it in exactly the areas where there was still room to grow. The characters have more depth, the world feels richer, and the chemistry between Kira and Nathaniel burns considerably hotter.

With 4.75 stars, this revised edition easily surpasses my experience with the original. Only some of the spicier elements kept it from receiving the full five stars from me, and that is ultimately a matter of personal taste rather than a criticism of the story itself.

Now that I’ve gotten to know Kira and Nathaniel “anew,” I’m more than ready to find out where the expanded Collared Trilogy takes them next.
