Tough Love in a Broken Chain of Command–A Dark, Addictive Ride

K.M. Moronova’s Leave Me Behind is a dark, gritty, and sometimes chaotic blend of military fiction and romance that thrives on tension—both on and off the battlefield. The novel opens with an author’s note warning readers that the military structure presented within its pages is highly fictionalized and not meant to reflect real-world systems. That disclaimer is definitely warranted. The Dark Forces and its various specialized squads feel more like something from a cinematic universe than a plausible chain of command—but that over-the-top setup is part of what makes this book compulsively readable.

Nell Gallows is the sole survivor of an elite dark forces squad, Riøt, after a devastating attack two years ago. Unsurprisingly, she's being put up as the top candidate for the special ops team: Malum. The squad that goes where no one else will or can. There's only one problem: Malum blames their one casualty from the Patagonia mission on the Riøt squad.

So what is she to do when she finds herself on a plane to California and on her way to a sure death sentence? A one-night stand. At least, that's all it was supposed to be – one last night to be free. Only, she finds out too late that the dark and mysterious man she solely wanted as a fling is not only her new comrade but also the one she dreaded meeting most – her immediate superior and untouchable devil in the field: Bones.

He's hell on earth – cruel and unforgiving, but most of all, he hates her, and he makes sure she knows it. And yet, she finds herself unwilling to leave his side when he's unable to get to the evac point when their mission goes awry.

She stays behind with the devil and the secrets he keeps. They only have one another to trust when no faith is left.

A Review

Opinion

The story follows Nell Gallows, a mid-twenties soldier who’s the last surviving member of her former squad, Riøt. Two years after a devastating mission wiped out her team, Nell is drafted into a new, elite unit known as Malum. Her arrival, however, is far from welcome. Her new comrades treat her with suspicion and resentment—particularly Bradshaw, better known by his call sign, Bones. The twist? Bones is not only her new superior officer, but also the mysterious man with whom she had a one-night stand just before joining the squad.

From the outset, the book sets up a strong premise: trauma, guilt, and attraction colliding in a violent, secretive world. Unfortunately, while the ingredients are all there, the execution doesn’t always deliver the emotional punch it promises. The protagonist, Nell (or Bunny, her call sign), is described as tough, violent, and ruthless—a hardened survivor who has seen too much. And to be fair, Moronova does succeed in painting her as physically formidable and mentally disciplined in the field. However, when the narrative shifts toward her inner struggles—especially her grief over losing her Riøt teammates—the emotional resonance falls surprisingly flat.

For a story written largely from Nell’s first-person perspective, I found it difficult to connect with her on a deeper level. Her trauma is described, but rarely felt. The words are there, the loss is mentioned repeatedly, yet it never quite transforms into something palpable. Strangely enough, I sensed more authentic feeling in her interactions with Bones than in her memories of the squad she supposedly loved and mourned. That imbalance made it hard to fully believe in her emotional core.

He saw darkness in me and held out a hand to lead me further into the shadows.

In contrast, Bones’ occasional POV chapters were some of the strongest sections of the book. His perspective brought an intensity and complexity that Nell’s lacked. While still a morally gray character (and often downright cruel), Bones came across as more human—burdened, self-aware, and intriguingly damaged. His relationship with Nell is undeniably toxic, yet there’s a grim fascination in watching the two circle each other, alternately clashing and colliding.

The dark romance elements of the story are, as the author warns, not for everyone. The sexual dynamic between Nell and Bones often toes the line between danger and desire—sometimes crossing it entirely. Fear, violence, and arousal become intertwined to the point that the threat of death almost morphs into a fetish. While that may alienate some readers, it does suit the volatile tone of the world Moronova has built. There’s a brutal honesty in the way she explores how trauma and attraction can become entangled in self-destructive ways.

“Together, our broken pieces can do anything.”

That said, the pacing of the novel falters toward the end. The last five to ten chapters, in particular, feel rushed compared to the earlier buildup. Key emotional and plot developments seem to happen too quickly, giving the impression that the author was hurrying to tie up loose ends rather than letting the story breathe. Nell’s final choices—especially her apparent willingness to “give up” after being portrayed as unbreakable for most of the book—don’t feel entirely consistent with her established character. It’s not that the ending is bad; it’s just not earned.

Despite these frustrations, Leave Me Behind remains a highly entertaining read. Moronova’s writing style is fast-paced and immersive, with short, impactful sentences that keep the tension high. The dialogue snaps, the action scenes are cinematic, and the chemistry between Nell and Bones—however twisted—is undeniable. I flew through its nearly 350 pages in just two days, and that alone speaks to its readability.

Conclusion

In the end, Leave Me Behind isn’t perfect—it’s messy, melodramatic, and sometimes emotionally hollow—but it’s also darkly addictive. Readers who enjoy morally gray characters, high-stakes military drama, and love stories that flirt with destruction will likely find themselves as torn and intrigued as I was.
A flawed but compelling mix of danger, desire, and destruction that keeps you turning the pages, even when you’re not entirely sure whether you should.

About K.M. Moronova

K.M. Moronova

K.M. Moronova has enjoyed telling dreary stories as far as she can remember. She adores reading and writing dark-themed, romantic books with plot twists and emotional turns. Often, she is found drying flowers in her study or drinking tea while relaxing in her garden. She loves spending time with her partner, exploring the forest, and envisioning more devastating stories to tell.
