The book introduces us to Adeline, the FMC, who is according to the book description “a manipulator of emotions. She can control and influence those around her with her words, making them feel whatever she desires”. Unfortunately, this part of her was not touched enough that it needs to be highlighted in the blurb.

However, there’s one person who remains unaffected by her “manipulations”: Zade (probably because he didn’t read any of her books), a shadowy figure who is always watching her, waiting for the right moment to make his move. Zade is a character who falls deeply in love, but his love is far from conventional. It’s obsessive, possessive, and even dangerous, and here it’s important to not mix fiction with reality. The dynamic between Adeline and Zade is intense, often straddling the line between passion and fear.

The story is well-constructed, with a plot that kept me engaged from start to finish. The tension between the characters is palpable, and the suspense builds as Zade‘s intentions become clearer. Carlton has a knack for creating a world that is dark and eerie, yet strangely alluring. The writing is evocative, it drew me into the twisted minds of the characters and made me feel their emotions, no matter how uncomfortable those might be.

One of the most compelling aspects of Haunting Adeline is its ability to blur the lines between right and wrong, love and obsession. Zade‘s behavior is undoubtedly immoral, his actions often crossing boundaries that should never be crossed. Yet, there is something undeniably fascinating about his character, and the way Carlton portrays his inner turmoil and relentless pursuit of Adeline is both disturbing and intriguing.

However, it’s important to acknowledge the book’s flaws, particularly when it comes to the sex scenes and the portrayal of Zade‘s behavior. These scenes are explicit and can be uncomfortable to read, especially given the power dynamics at play. The content is dark and twisted, and it’s crucial for readers to remember that this is a work of fiction. The behaviors depicted, while captivating in a dark romance setting, are not something to be emulated or romanticized in real life.
