Power, Revenge, and Betrayal: A Solid but Imperfect Third Installment

The Sacrifice is the third standalone novel in The L.O.R.D.S. series, and like the other installments, it dives deep into the world of wealth, power, and secrets surrounding Barrington University’s infamous Lords. Readers of The Ritual and The Sinner will already be familiar with Tyson Crawford—he appeared in both books, though always more in the background. Here, however, he finally gets his own story, stepping into the spotlight as a Lord who has distanced himself from that society after a betrayal that scarred him years ago. What makes his tale intriguing is that the betrayal never came from his fellow Lords who swore to protect him, but from another source altogether—and Tyson has spent years collecting information and carefully plotting his revenge.

HIS LADY

A Lord is to marry after he graduates from Barrington University, an elite college for the rich. A Lady’s job is to help him fit into a world unaware of his secret society. The Lord does not get to choose who he spends the rest of his life with. But there is always an exception to the rule. And I just so happen to be his.

I VOW. YOU VOW. WE VOW.

I was to wed a Lord of my parents’ choosing. Wealth can’t buy you everything, or I would have had freedom years ago. Instead, my strict parents made sure I lived a dull life in a mansion resembling a prison.

But on my wedding day, I was handed over to another man—an even more ruthless Lord that my family hated.

Tyson Riley Crawford only wanted me for his revenge. I’m nothing more than a debt to be paid. I didn’t have a say in the matter. So when I said my vows before the congregation, I knew I’d break them. Consequences be damned.

Too bad I underestimated my husband and didn’t realize he was more determined to punish me than I was to succeed at escaping. He’ll make me choke on those words I used to bind myself to him.

Yet even he couldn’t have seen what our future held. Ultimately, we’re all just pawns in a game that none of us can win unless you’re willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice … and even that may not be enough.

A Review

Opinion

The premise is immediately compelling. The blurb promises an arranged marriage steeped in manipulation, revenge, and the high stakes of the Lords’ society. Tessier delivers on the darker tones, weaving a narrative where Tyson weds a woman not out of love, but as part of his long-brewing vengeance against her father. From the start, I was reminded that the Lords’ world is not built on fairness or freedom, but on duty, deception, and debts that must be paid.

That being said, this book was a mixed bag for me, and that’s why I landed on a 3.5-star rating. I’ll start with what worked well: the suspense. The last hundred pages really took off and had me turning the chapters quickly. The tension escalated to a satisfying climax, and the payoff in terms of drama and revelations was worth the build-up. Tyson’s internal conflict—his desire for revenge battling against his growing attachment to his wife—added emotional weight to the ending. Tessier is skilled at pulling readers into her characters’ twisted games, and she delivered that once again here.

However, I struggled with the first half of the book. While I appreciate that this series often leans into dark romance, I found the humiliation Tyson inflicted on his new wife to be excessive, especially early on. I’m not here to kink shame, and I understand that this genre thrives on exploring those edges, but what was missing for me was any sense of romance at the start. Tyson clearly never intended revenge on his wife herself—his true target was her father—yet he never gave her even a glimpse into his reasoning. This lack of communication made the early relationship dynamics feel unnecessarily cruel, and it left me wishing that Tessier had allowed just a bit more vulnerability between them from the beginning. That would have balanced the darkness with something tender, and made their later connection more believable.

Another issue was the repetitiveness of the sex scenes. Tessier writes with intensity, but after a while, the encounters started to blur together because they felt too similar. For me, the emotional stakes between Tyson and his wife were far more compelling than the physical ones, and I would have loved to see their intimacy develop in more varied, layered ways.

Despite these frustrations, I did enjoy the book overall. Tyson is a fascinating character—haunted, vengeful, but ultimately still capable of love if he lets himself. His journey from cold executioner of a plan to someone forced to confront deeper feelings was satisfying to watch unfold. The Lady, too, had her moments of strength, even though I sometimes wished she’d been given more agency earlier in the story.

Conclusion

In conclusion, The Sacrifice delivers what many readers of dark romance crave: high tension, morally gray characters, and a climax that keeps you hooked until the very last page. But for me, the lack of romance early on and the repetitive intimacy held it back from being a 4- or 5-star read. Still, fans of Tessier’s style—and especially those who’ve been following Tyson since The Ritual and The Sinner—will likely find plenty to enjoy in this twisted, dramatic installment.
