A Dark and Mesmerizing Sequel That Leaves You in Tatters

Amber V. Nicole has done it again. The Throne of Broken Gods is a masterpiece of dark fantasy, a whirlwind of emotions that pulled me in and refused to let go until the very last page. Picking up where The Book of Azrael left off, this sequel is an electrifying descent into vengeance, grief, and the blurred lines between hero and villain. It’s a story filled with deception, secrets hidden in plain sight, and a protagonist whose rage burns brighter than any flame.

WHERE THERE ARE GODS, THERE ARE ALSO MONSTERS . . .

When I burn this world to embers, and you paint me as the villain, remember,
I really did try to be good . . . once.

Dianna is hellbent on revenge. As the last shred of her humanity is ripped from her, she decides to embrace her monstrous side and set the worlds alight.

Samkiel alone refuses to believe that she has become the monster that everyone else sees, and he'll do anything in his power to save her from herself, even if it means losing her.

With every realm now at risk from Kaden's army, and a myriad of new threats on the horizon, Samkiel can't afford to let his guard down. And as Dianna's thirst for blood only increases, he is running out of time to save them both . . .

A Review

Opinion

Dianna — Consumed by Fury

From the very beginning, I was thrust into Dianna’s spiraling fury. She is no longer just the woman I met in book one—she is wrath incarnate. Betrayed, used, and discarded by Kaden and his allies, she has lost everything that tethered her to a semblance of normalcy. The last remnants of her humanity are slipping away, and she embraces the monster she has become. And yet, even in her descent, there’s something heartbreakingly compelling about her. She is not mindless in her rage—her pain is palpable, her grief raw, her thirst for revenge justified.

Chapter Two, p.15

“When I burn this world to embers, and you paint me as the villain, remember, I really did try to be good … once.”

Amber V. Nicole – The Throne of Broken Gods, p.15

Samkiel — The Last Anchor

Samkiel, ever the steady force, refuses to let go of the woman he loves. But loving Dianna in this state is akin to standing on the edge of a crumbling cliff—dangerous, unpredictable, and bound to end in tragedy. He alone believes that she is still more than just her vengeance, that somewhere within the fury, the Dianna he once knew still exists. His unwavering devotion is both admirable and painful to witness, especially as he struggles against the inevitability of her choices.

Chapter Seven, p.62

“[…] The way I care for you is vastly different. The lengths I will go to for you are unfathomable. I refuse to let you hurt yourself, no matter how vile or mean you are to me. I know you’re in pain. You are mourning and someone like you will grieve just as hard and deeply as you love.”

Amber V. Nicole – The Throne of Broken Gods, p.62

A Tension That Burns

The tension between them is staggering. At times, Dianna’s rage is so consuming that even Samkiel is at risk of being caught in the fire. There are moments when she seems ready to destroy him, and yet, he remains the only one capable of drawing any real emotion from her. Their dynamic is intoxicating—a delicate balance of love, fury, and an ever-growing divide that might just be impossible to bridge.

Chapter Seven, p.60

This fire was born of rage and grief, and she was burning too hot and fast.

Amber V. Nicole – The Throne of Broken Gods, p.60

Masterful Pacing and Emotional Depth

One of the most masterful aspects of this book is its pacing. At over 770 pages, it would have been easy for the story to drag, but Nicole ensures that every moment serves a purpose. There’s a method to the madness—yes, at times it feels as if the plot moves in circles, but isn’t that exactly what grief does? The push and pull of anger and sorrow, the inescapable loop of mourning and destruction—it’s hauntingly realistic in its portrayal. Rather than feeling repetitive, it feels necessary, a natural evolution of Dianna’s unraveling psyche.

Secrets Hidden Between the Lines

And then there are the secrets—the carefully woven deceptions that linger in the background, just out of reach. I could sense them, feel them creeping between the lines, but the full truth remains elusive until the very moment Nicole chooses to unveil it. Even when you suspect that certain characters aren’t being entirely honest, there is always doubt—just enough uncertainty that kept me on edge, wondering if I truly know who can be trusted.

Eighty, p.670

“It’s done. The dreameaters did their part by planting the seeds of freedom in their minds.”

Amber V. Nicole – The Throne of Broken Gods, p.670

A Devastating and Unforgettable Read

By the time I reached the final pages, I was an emotional wreck. This book doesn’t just tell a story—it consumed me. It forced me to experience every moment of Dianna’s pain, every flicker of hope, every devastating loss. Nicole’s writing is brutal in its beauty, her storytelling masterful in its ability to draw out every ounce of emotion from me, the reader.

Conclusion

Final Verdict: A Must-Read Sequel

The Throne of Broken Gods is not just a sequel; it is an experience. It is a story of revenge, love, and the impossible choices that define us. It is about monsters—both the ones we fight and the ones we become. Amber V. Nicole has crafted something truly unforgettable, a book that will stay with me long after I turned the last page.
If you loved The Book of Azrael, prepare yourself—this one will break you in the best possible way.

Five stars, and I would give it more if I could.

About Amber V. Nicole

Amber V. Nicole

Amber V. Nicole is a dark fantasy writer with a touch of horror added into the mix. When she is not writing new and fantastic ways to devastate her readers, she is probably playing video games or obsessing over anime. Amber loves morally gray characters with their flaws and all and is always dreaming of far off places with dragons, magic, and swords. She loves a good villain and plans to tell many stories showcasing them in the spotlight.
