Sass, Shadows, and Shifter Secrets: My 4.5-Star Review of Rejected

Jaymin Eve’s Rejected, the first book in the Shadow Beast Shifters trilogy, was one of those reads that swept me along like a fast river current. I finished it in just a few days, not because it’s short or simple, but because the writing style is so fluid that turning “just one more page” becomes a quiet addiction. It’s the kind of storytelling that doesn’t fight you for attention. Instead, it slides effortlessly into your imagination and keeps you there, scene after scene.

My father made a terrible mistake. One I’m left paying for.

As a wolf shifter growing up in a strong pack, I should be living my best life. But after my father tried to kill the alpha, I’m labeled an outcast, traitor, less than dirt.

When I can't take pack life any longer, I run, but apparently they don't like losing their punching bag. Torin, the alpha’s son, drags me back before my first shift... a shift that will reveal my true mate.

I never could have predicted who mine would be, but the moment my wolf looks upon him, I’m filled with hope for a brighter future.

After all, no one ever rejects their true mate, right?
Wrong. Very wrong.

When the wolves attack, my soul screams for vengeance, and somehow I touch the shadow world. Somehow I bring him to our lands.

The Shadow Beast. Our shifter god. The devil himself.

Turns out being rejected by my mate was only the beginning.

A Review

Opinion

One of the standout elements for me was the female protagonist, Mera. From the very beginning she refuses to be the broken victim her circumstances seem to demand. For almost a decade she has lived as the pack’s scapegoat. Her father’s attempt to kill the Alpha condemned her to a life of humiliation, bullying, and isolation. Despite this relentless treatment, she has not lost herself. In fact, her personality is one of the strongest parts of the book.

Mera’s voice is sharp, sarcastic, and refreshingly honest. Her dry humor and quick wit add a lot of color to the story, especially in moments where the situation would otherwise be bleak. She is the kind of heroine who speaks her mind without hesitation, even when doing so might get her into trouble. That sass and stubborn resilience made her incredibly enjoyable to follow, and I had to laugh out lout a couple of times. Rather than feeling like another passive heroine waiting for fate to rescue her, she feels active, alive, and fiercely determined to carve out her own freedom.

And freedom is exactly what she wants. Her dream is simple: leave the pack territory behind and finally live a life that belongs to her. Unfortunately, things unravel in a way she never could have predicted. Her long-awaited first shift arrives, which should be a moment of transformation and hope. Instead, it becomes the start of an even more chaotic journey.

The central turning point of the story is, of course, the rejection itself. In shifter lore, the concept of a true mate is sacred. It represents destiny, loyalty, and unbreakable bonds. So when Mera finally discovers who her mate is, the moment should signal the end of her suffering. Instead, he rejects her outright. That scene carries real emotional weight and sets the tone for everything that follows.

The title suddenly feels brutally literal.

But the rejection is only the first domino to fall. When Mera’s rage and desperation reach their peak, something mysterious awakens within her. Somehow she reaches into another realm and summons the Shadow Beast himself, the shifter god feared across their world.

Shadow is easily one of the most fascinating characters in the book. He isn’t a shining savior riding in to rescue the heroine. He is morally grey, powerful, unpredictable, and clearly driven by motives of his own. At first glance it might seem like he has come to help Mera, but it soon becomes clear that he has his own agenda. His presence injects the story with tension and intrigue, because you can never quite tell whether he is ally, antagonist, or something in between.

Much of the second half of the story takes place in Shadow’s realm, where Mera must once again find her footing in unfamiliar territory. What I really liked here is that she doesn’t isolate herself. Her open and honest nature makes it easy for her to connect with others.

She forms a sweet friendship with Angel, a kind and somewhat mysterious being from another realm whose warmth provides a welcome contrast to the darker atmosphere surrounding Shadow. At the same time, Shadow’s five closest confidantes gradually begin seeking Mera’s company as well, creating an interesting dynamic that hints at deeper developments for future books.

Another layer that keeps the story compelling is the mystery surrounding Mera herself. As the plot unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that she may be far more than just a wolf shifter. Strange abilities, unusual reactions from powerful beings, and the secrets surrounding her origins all suggest that something much bigger is going on. Yet frustratingly, no one seems able or willing to tell her exactly what she is.

That uncertainty adds a strong sense of anticipation to the narrative and makes the reader eager to continue the series.

Conclusion

If I had to point to why this book earned a solid 4.5 stars from me, it would come down to three things: the incredibly smooth pacing, the fantastic voice of the protagonist, and the intriguing mix of humor, danger, and supernatural mystery. The story never drags, Mera’s personality makes even tense moments entertaining, and the morally complex presence of Shadow adds depth to what could otherwise have been a straightforward shifter romance.

Rejected is dramatic, witty, and full of hooks that make it very hard to put down. By the time the final pages arrived, I was already curious to see where Mera’s journey would lead next, and what secrets about her true nature were still waiting in the shadows.
