A Breath Between Storms: His Cursed Beast Finds Calm in the Chaos

I’m giving His Cursed Beast by Darcy Fayton a solid 4 stars. After the oppressive weight of the previous two installments, this entry feels like stepping out of a storm cellar into dim but breathable air. The darkness is still there, coiled beneath the surface, but the tone is noticeably calmer, almost deceptively gentle.

Sebastian only wanted to give Kathryn one peaceful afternoon.
So he takes her to lunch.

The guest is an old friend of his—charming, cultured, and inconveniently handsome.
And Kathryn notices immediately.

Worse, she likes him.

Their laughter comes easily. Their conversation flows. And as Sebastian watches the two of them together, something dark and possessive begins to coil in his chest.

Jealousy is a dangerous thing in a vampire.

Especially when the man across the table carries secrets Sebastian knows all too well.

Beyond the quiet walls of Rookvane Manor, tensions in the city are beginning to stir. Rumours whisper of old powers are shifting.

But Sebastian finds his attention fixed on one far more immediate problem.

The way Kathryn looks at someone who is not him.

And Sebastian has never been particularly good at sharing.

Dark forbidden romance. Jealousy, possession, and a dangerous game between friends and rivals.

A Review

Opinion

Following the events of His Broken Vow and His Father’s Sin, where the atmosphere veered into something deeply unsettling and at times perverse—particularly in how the “bargain” continued to unfold—this fifth installment softens the edges without abandoning the core tension of the series. The consequences of Sebastian’s reluctant deal still linger like a shadow that refuses to lift, but here, the narrative allows its characters a rare pause.

That pause comes in the form of Theodore, a friend of Sebastian’s and this night’s patron. His presence shifts the dynamic in a way that feels almost radical for this series. Unlike the previous encounters, which were steeped in control, spectacle, and imbalance, this one carries a strange, hesitant compassion. It is important to note that the situation is still not fully consensual—if anything, the lack of true autonomy extends to both Kathryn and Theodore—but the intent behind it is markedly different. Theodore does not seek to dominate or exploit; instead, he participates out of a desire to help, to ease the burden placed on both Kathryn and Sebastian. That alone introduces a layer of emotional complexity that the series has been slowly building toward.

For the first time, Kathryn is given something close to mental space. The ever-present pressure of being observed, judged, and reduced to a role is lifted, even if only temporarily. And in that space, we see her differently. She is still strong—fiercely so—but here, her strength is quieter, less reactive, more rooted in her ability to exist without constant fear. It’s a subtle shift, but an important one, and one that made this installment stand out to me.

The interplay between Kathryn and Theodore is also refreshingly natural. Their ease with one another—conversation that flows, laughter that feels unforced—creates a contrast that is impossible to ignore, especially when placed next to Kathryn’s dynamic with Sebastian. And that contrast raises a question the story doesn’t shy away from: what does Kathryn actually feel, and why?

This remains my biggest point of disconnect. Despite everything we learn about Sebastian—his guilt, his self-loathing, his internal struggle—I still find it difficult to understand Kathryn’s deep emotional attachment to him. His inner monologues, filled with regret and possessiveness, are compelling in isolation, but they don’t fully bridge the gap for me. From my perspective, he simply hasn’t earned the kind of devotion Kathryn seems to carry for him. Sympathy for him remains elusive, and at this point, I suspect it may continue to be a challenge for the rest of the series.

That said, his jealousy in this installment is one of its more engaging elements. It’s sharp, uncomfortable, and revealing. Watching him react to Kathryn’s genuine connection with Theodore adds tension without relying on the more extreme elements of earlier books. It’s a reminder that, beneath all the supernatural constructs, this is still a story about flawed people grappling with desire, control, and the fear of losing something they barely understand.

Conclusion

Overall, His Cursed Beast feels like a recalibration. It doesn’t abandon the darkness, but it reframes it, allowing space for nuance, for quieter emotion, and for a different kind of connection. It’s not perfect—Sebastian remains a difficult character to fully invest in—but it offers a welcome shift in tone and a glimpse of what this series can achieve when it leans into emotional complexity rather than shock.

A steadier, more introspective installment that gives both its characters—and its readers—a moment to breathe.
