A Review

Opinion

The truth uncovered at the end of book one about a seventh witch bloodline sends ripples through everything, and Arden is now standing at the center of a supernatural earthquake. This time, the narrative leans less on shock value and more on consolidation. Arden and the Imperium Cadre, Theron, Valerian, Daire, Fallon, and Astor, are no longer circling each other with guarded curiosity. They are a unit, and that shift in dynamic is one of the strongest aspects of this book. The need to stick together feels organic rather than convenient, forged by shared danger and an increasing awareness that Arden’s destiny is entwined with theirs whether any of them like it or not.

One of the most enjoyable threads is the slow, methodical unraveling of riddles hidden in wooden boxes, grimoires, and stubborn scraps of parchment that refuse to give up their secrets easily. There is something deeply satisfying about watching ancient magic resist modern impatience. The way these puzzles are approached, debated, and ultimately decoded gives the story a sense of intellectual momentum. It is not just about brute force or magical dominance, but about interpretation, memory, and understanding what has been deliberately obscured.

Arden’s journey of self-discovery, however, is far from complete. The witch coven demands proof, and both Arden and the Cadre are increasingly convinced that she is a hybrid. The question is of what kind. Fallon’s training sessions with her, meant to uncover whether she is half witch and half Elven, are particularly compelling. These moments balance physical discipline with emotional proximity, allowing their connection to deepen in a way that feels earned. The romance and tension continue to simmer rather than boil over, which works well for the pacing of a middle book.

Not everything sits comfortably, though, and that is not necessarily a flaw. Meri, Arden’s only female friend, feels off throughout much of the story. There is a subtle wrongness to her behavior that made me question the sincerity of her friendship more than once. Whether this unease is intentional groundwork or simply a character that does not quite land yet remains to be seen, but it certainly kept me alert whenever she appeared on the page.

The final act pulls the story into darker territory as Arden and the Cadre join her demon family in the Underworld. The battle that unfolds there is more than spectacle. It reveals a massive clue pointing toward the overarching plot, one that reframes much of what we thought we understood. The introduction of the question “Who is the Prime?” lands like a stone dropped into deep water. The ripples are immediate, but the depths remain hidden, lending the ending a deliciously ominous quality.

Stylistically, the book remains easy and smooth to read. The prose does not call attention to itself, which in this case is a strength. It allowed me to move through the story quickly, finishing it comfortably within two days. The writing supports the narrative without overshadowing it, keeping the focus firmly on character dynamics, mystery, and world-building.

If I have a critique, it mirrors my feelings about the first book. I still want more depth. More history, more politics, more time spent exploring the consequences of these revelations. That said, as a second installment, this book does exactly what it should. It expands the world, strengthens relationships, and opens doors that cannot be closed again.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a strong continuation that builds anticipation rather than resolving it. The foundations are shifting, the true enemy remains elusive, and Arden is clearly only beginning to understand what she is. Four stars, and a strong urge to keep reading.
