Heartless Heathens ♦ Santana Knox | Review

Prepare to be swept away into a world both haunting and captivating in Santana Knox’s Heartless Heathens. Knox drew me into a web of mystery and intrigue from the very first page, and kept me there until the very last word. With a powerful blend of drama, suspense, and just the right amount of spice, this dystopian work of fiction kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Hey, Over here.
No, look up.
Yeah, I’m the one they talk about.

The headmaster’s prized possession, locked away in the bell tower of Notre-Dame Parochial College. To most of the students I was just a myth. An urban legend. The girl who rings the bells up in the tower, the one who talks to gargoyles.
Frollo’s secret.

Then they showed up, those heathens. Outcasts, just like me. But these men aren’t just dangerous, they’re heartless. They won’t abide or bend to the rules of this deranged school and the secrets it keeps from the world.
Now that they’ve found me, they may never let me go. And maybe I wouldn’t want them to…

Heartless Heathens is a Dark Romance Reverse Harem, loosely inspired from major points of Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris. This is NOT a retelling, it is NOT a fractured fairy tale. All characters are adults. This story does not involve any characters of Romany descent.

This book is dark in nature, please see author's note for trigger warnings. Not intended for readers under 18.

Heartless Heathens ♦ Santana Knox

A Review

Opinion

Nothing less than magnificent describes Knox’s writing style. Because of the careful crafting of each sentence, I was drawn more and more into the twisted and terrible world that she has constructed. Her atmospheric and evocative style conjures up vivid images that will stay in my mind long after the book is closed. Every scene, from the sumptuous halls of power to the bleak surroundings of the dystopian setting, is brought to life with an extraordinary vividness.

Heartless Heathens is centered around a mystery that eluded me until the very end. As I attempted to piece together the truth behind the mysteries that linger in the gloomy underbelly of the campus, Knox deftly combines a number of narrative strands. Knox adds another twist to the story just when I believed I had everything figured out, leaving me gasping and wanting more.

But Heartless Heathens is a captivating read for more reasons than only the mystery. Knox has crafted a cast of characters that are as complex and multifaceted as the world they inhabit. Every character, from the mysterious anti-heroes to the crafty femme fatale, has depth and subtlety that make them seem more like actual people than just fictional creations on paper. As the narrative progressed, I couldn’t help but become engrossed in these individuals‘ lives—I had to cheer for them, cry with them, and eventually become completely invested in their outcomes.

And then … there’s the spice. Oh, the spice! I was left speechless by the seductive moments of desire and intrigue that Heartless Heathens brims with. Knox is not afraid to tackle the sinister but fun aspects of human nature. The chemistry between the characters, from morally forbidden romances to risky alliances, sizzles off the page and intensifies an already smoldering story.

Conclusion

Heartless Heathens is a jewel of dystopian fiction, and I can’t wait to read more from the author. It’s a novel that should be loved and savored because of its excellent writing, intriguing plot, and spicy content. I, for one, am eager to discover what sinister pleasures Santana Knox has in store for me next. In my eyes, she has unquestionably established herself as a superb storyteller. Strongly recommended for anyone looking for a really unforgettable book or for readers of dystopian literature mixed with a dash of spice.

About Santana Knox

Santana Knox

Santana Knox is a Brazilian author, a South American immigrant, a mother, wife, and witch.

Santana got tired of letting the voices in their head drive them crazy, and decided to write down the stories they were begging to tell instead. A lover of the unusual, and a hopeless romantic when it comes to toxic villains, Santana's books should always be taken with a grain of salt, specifically the kind that keeps demons away.
