When Ancient Power Meets Its Match: A Fierce, Fast-Paced Dive into a Reverse-Harem Sanctuary

Going into The Rowan, I expected a fast, trope-forward paranormal romance with reverse-harem energy and not much else. What I got was exactly that, but also something sharper, more confident, and frankly more fun than anticipated. This first installment in the Killian Blade series by Stella Brie reads like a door flung open into a crowded, dangerous supernatural ballroom where everyone is powerful, beautiful, and hiding secrets behind polite smiles.

For over three hundred years, Arden's very existence has been hidden. Until one night, when the latest assassination attempt fails and the third Killian blade makes its appearance.

A powerful witch with little knowledge of her heritage, Arden's first step on the path of destiny is The Abbey. A place of sanctuary and power, it's a haven in a sea of unknowns and where she hopes to find an ally.

An Elven prince, a Fae lord, the First Vampire, a warlock, and the King of Dragons make up the Imperium Cadre, one of the most powerful cadres in existence. Owning and managing The Abbey for over a thousand years, they're not known for taking in strays. But Lord Theron's life debt paves Arden's entry into the formidable sphere of their protection.

As the sweeping winds of change blow, Arden and the cadre will navigate the path of destiny together. Secrets are revealed, heritage found, and alliances forged and lost.

A Review

Opinion

Originally, I wanted to read the book in German, but that plan collapsed almost immediately. The German translation uses a very simple, flattened tone that drained much of the atmosphere, and a rather glaring translation error right at the beginning was the final straw. I switched to the English version via Kindle Unlimited, and the difference was night and day. In English, the tone is noticeably more mature and self-assured, which suits the reverse-harem trope far better. The prose flows easily, never tripping over itself, and it becomes one of those books where “just one more chapter” quietly turns into finishing all 244 pages in a single day.

The storyline itself is intriguing and sets a solid foundation for what is clearly meant to be a sprawling series. For a while, I did struggle to distinguish between the five MMCs and their respective paranormal identities. With Fae, Elven, Vampire, Dragon, Demon, Wizard, and even mixed beings all sharing page time, the cast can feel like a supernatural roll call. That said, once the story settles into the rhythms of The Abbey, a paranormal sanctuary, the distinctions become clearer, and the sheer variety starts to feel like a strength rather than a burden.

Arden, the FMC, is where this book truly shines. She is a witch and almost certainly something more, possibly mixed in ways that even she does not fully understand yet. What I appreciated most is that she is not written as a timid newcomer or a wide-eyed grey mouse stumbling through a paranormal world she barely understands. Arden is over three hundred years old, immortal, and it shows. She is a seasoned warrior, capable of holding her own in sparring matches against Valerian, the dragon, without the narrative bending itself into implausibility. Her competence feels earned rather than gifted.

Watching Arden sweep into The Abbey and completely upend the expectations of its five rulers is deeply satisfying. These are ancient, powerful beings who believe they have seen everything, and they absolutely did not see her coming. The way Arden connects with each member of the Imperium Cadre feels organic. The emotional, and at times sexual, tensions develop naturally instead of being forced for the sake of the trope. Each dynamic has its own flavor, its own friction, and its own pull.

Another highlight is Arden’s mind. Her sense of strategy and quiet cunning, especially when dealing with the leader of the witch coven, a thoroughly power-hungry and deeply unpleasant character, adds teeth to the story. Arden does not just survive. She maneuvers, calculates, and strikes where it hurts most.

My main criticism is the depth. I wanted more. More lore, more political intrigue, more time to breathe inside this world. Another 200 pages would not have gone amiss. Still, the fact that I could immediately continue with The Rowan’s Stone softens that complaint considerably.

Conclusion

All in all, this is a strong, addictive start to a paranormal reverse-harem series that knows exactly what it wants to be.Polished, entertaining, and packed with powerful beings who finally meet their match, The Rowan earns a solid four stars from me, with plenty of anticipation for what comes next.
